It's a fucking cartoon...

I have a buddy who watches anime, but doesn't defend it. He just likes it. I can dig that.

What I don't get, however, are the people who defend anime like it's some kind of art form.

Hey, knuckleheads, it's a fucking cartoon. That's it. A cartoon.

Just because it's made in Japan doesn't make it anything special. It's no different from The Simpsons or Family Guy. And watching a cartoon from Japan doesn't make you elite.

Come out of the basement of the science building, kids. You're defending cartoons.

I am actually glad stewie made the reference to Simpsons or Family Guy since a large portion of anime and manga is made for an older viewer. Of course I am a little girl and like to watch the little girl shoujo stuff :P.

While I agree with parts your post I think you are also wrong. I can't put it on this pedestal, but there is a big difference between American cartoons and anime.

Renaldo - and the snorkles!

fnord - I understand it's made for adults. And there is a big difference. You won't see tenticle sex on the simpsons. :-D

No i am not even talking about hentai or even ecchi stuff. In general storylines are deeper and more involved. There is more intellect put into the shows/movies than would be found in the US stuff. It is just a much more accepted medium over there and not percieved as a "kiddie thing" over there. I think that is why most people have a problem with the cartoon/anime thing.

Of course there is a lot of fluff, but hell, even Sailor Moon has more substance to it than My Little Pony.

You can't tell me southpark doesn't have intellect.

Just because it's intelligently written doesn't change the fact that it's a cartoon.

DON'T BE THAT GUY, SHIKI!

DON'T DO IT!

IT WAS YOU I TALKED ABOUT IN THE FIRST LINE!

DON'T MAKE ME GO BACK ON MY WORD!

The snorkles. LOL Laws yes!

Everyone defending anime makes that argument, and it just doesn't wash. There may be those elements to it, but there's also kitten girls, over the top characters added for comic relief, inane dialogue and more melodrama than a turn of the century parlor play. All of this serves to derail anything deep or serious about it.

You can admit you like to watch half naked cartoon chicks, that's a legitimate reason. But what you're saying you're reading Playboy for the articles.

There are plenty of great American cartoons, I am not saying they are better or worse than anime. I am not being that guy. :D

Renaldo, your argument is putting everything into one thing. It doesn't make sense. There are not catgirls in every show. Hell, I would say 90% of the shows I watch don't have a catgirl in them. A lot of shows do try to put in too much comic relief with over the top characters, but there are a good amount that do not.

Watch something like Serial Experiments Lain, Boogiepop Phantom, Tsukihime, and countless others and they have none of those things.

Yes, there is a lot of melodrama... but I enjoy that at times. :)

Ace, you are my hero.

Starblazers fucking rocks. And you know what? It's better than 99% of all other 'anime' out there. But you bring it up to any anime fan and they roll their eyes at you!

Fnordboy, you are not my hero. You and your kind with your cosplay and what not are what is wrong with America today. You can deny it, but you know it's true.

And what the hell is with all the asian characters in anime having big wide eyes, and all the caucasian characters having slanted eyes? Isn't it odd that they believe the big wide eyes are more soulful and innocent, yet they persecute the people who actually have those eyes? By giving them the same slanted eyes that the creators have in real life!?!? This is just plain odd.

And another thing, c'mon. Anime sucks. You know it, you just don't want to admit it.

Is it wrong that I only like the anime where the big c**ked demons rape the cute schoolgirls?

Oh wait. I mean, I know a guy who likes those anime. A friend.

Yeah, I've got a friend who likes that stuff.

Stewie will you take FNORDBOY'S ANIME CHALLENGE!™?

I will send you a few episodes of a couple of shows and you tell me what is wrong with them or < gasp > that you might even like them.

Renaldo, I would send some to your heathen land of sex and gambling as well if you are up to the challenge.

I'm not saying anime is bad. I've enjoyed some anime.

But I call it how I see it.

Car. Toon.

Nothing wrong with watching it. Nothing wrong with collecting it.

But it's a cartoon. Nothing more, nothing less.

Agreed. But without the negative connotation that comes along with the word "cartoon" in this country.

I don't think it is a lesser art form than live action.

I see what you are saying, but I somewhat disagree.

You aren't going to get the artistic camera work in anime you will see in the works of Michael Mann, Kubrick, Spielbergh, Bay, or (gag) Argento.

It's easier to draw your landscapes then to find them and film them properly.

Anime has a positive connotation?! LOL

I'll take you up on your offer. Just bring them to HF and I'll mail 'em back.

I have found anime I liked. Speed Racer rocked, as did the aforementioned Starblazers. Cowboy Bebop was OK, but nothing special. There was a time when I actually tried to like anime, and it just never happened. Finding something I could like, let alone stand, was like panning for gold.

Mero: A lot of times hentai is pixellated too. That is not where anime came from anyway.

Can they do far crazier things in an anime hentai? Of course. And there are plenty of people out there that will eat that up.

I actually only own one hentai series (Bible Black) and it honestly is because of the storyline. I don't go for the chicks with dicks/tentacle rape stuff... unless it is for humor.

Does that make fiction less of a form of literature than nonfiction?

It's easier to make up your characters than write about real people. I know. I was a history double-major for about a semester.
